Green Goblin

St Mary's C of E Primary School has been involved in the Greenpower Goblin electric kit car for several years with many of our year 5 and 6 pupils getting involved in building and competing with the car.

The cars are designed specifically to offer primary school pupils a chance to get involved in a simple, practical engineering project that embraces many relevant aspects of science and technology in a fun and exciting way. The kit cars are (fairly!) simple to build and provide an excellent grounding in basic engineering skills. Once built the pupils compete in organised races and events.

The project involves years 5 and 6, who have formed strong teams that demonstrate their prowess, in building the cars successfully, competing with them, but have also won a number of prizes individually and as a team! The season starts with a race at Plumpton followed by Portsmouth and Littlehampton, before culminating in a huge event at Goodwood Motor Circuit in July 2011.

The pupils develop driving skills, mechanical skills and work very hard and effectively as a team representing the school.

The project is going from strength to strength. We have secured two major sponsors, including John Mitchell Racing (JMR), VW Audi Specialist, who have helped the team get a brand new car, and equipment. The school now has two cars to compete with, allowing greater involvement of the children in building and competing.

The project is run by parents and supported by a whole host of people who support the enthusiasm and commitment of the children, including teachers, Governors, parents, and local businesses that help the team out with specialist expertise and equipment.

The team has great plans for the future including reflecting the schools environmental status by making the car even 'greener', through collecting scrap material, aluminum cans, metals and plastics to the same weight as the cars, to offset the impact on the environment. We also plan to visit local engineering companies with the team so they can get a better insight into engineering as a potential career. To make the team even more professional we intend to enhance their appearance with smart new overalls and caps.

If you would like more information, or even better, to support the team, either contact the school or come and watch them in action at one of the events.
