Dear Parents and Carers

Oliver Class – Summer 2nd half, 2017

I hope you all enjoyed the sunny weather of the half term week and that the children are excited about the last half term before the summer holidays!

Freeflow:
Over the next half term, we have lots of exciting learning activities planned around the topic ‘Are we there yet?’  In this topic, we will be exploring different countries/continents from around the world and looking at how we get there, the language, food, animals that live there, the culture, climate and places of interest.

In the first 2 weeks, all the class will look at the country of Italy and will choose what area of the country they want to investigate and find out more about.  They will all also have an opportunity to make a pizza as part of our food focus.  In the following weeks, the children will be able to choose which country they want to explore and will work in a small group to investigate all different aspects of their chosen country.  They will then present their findings to the rest of the class.

Sparkling writing:
In English and sparkly writing sessions, we will be planning and writing our own version of the stories ‘Nibble Monster’, ‘The Tear Thief’, ‘Mrs Armitage on Wheels’, as well as writing an information sheet about our class for the new Reception children joining Year 1 next year.

Science:
In Science this half term, we will be looking at plants, with a particular focus on identifying different flowers and trees, their structure, as well as looking at what plants need to survive.  We will also carry out a plant investigation, where we explore the importance of light, water and nutrients in the soil for the seed we will attempt to grow.

RE:
In RE, having examined the different creation stories believed by the Jewish and Christian faith last term, we will now look at God’s world today and how and why we should protect and respect it.

PE:
PE this term will continue to be on Wednesdays and Thursdays.  This half term, the children will be carrying on with athletics with Pro-Academy and starting golf sessions with Miss Tomkins outside as we ended up having a mat ball focus last half term and didn’t get around to starting golf!

Spellings, reading and homework:
As always, where possible, please continue to read to or with your child at home and practice their spellings with them.  They will be tested on a Monday and given new spellings the same day in their yellow spelling books or in their reading records if they don’t have their spelling book with them.  Please try and make sure where possible, that their spelling book and reading record is in school Monday-Thursday.

Year 2 will continue to receive a piece of English and Maths homework once a week on a Tuesday.  Year 1 will receive some Maths homework informally by Mrs Woodley.  Any queries or concerns about this homework, please feel free to make an appointment or have an informal chat with either myself or Mrs Woodley.

Other information:
We are hoping to plan a trip around our Freeflow topic so please look out for a letter detailing further information about this.

It is a busy half term with lots of other exciting events taking place such as, transition morning, school production, sports day, achievement assembly, outdoor day, to name a few!  Please continue to look at the newsletter and specific letters for further information about these things.  We always give out letters to the children and ask them to put them in their book bags/drawers to take home at the end of the day; I am aware however, they don’t always make it home to you, so if you haven’t received information about something, please come and see me or Mrs Mott in the office.

I look forward to the last half term with the children!

Yours sincerely,

Rachel Tomkins
